This story is not part of the Revelation Space series. It was developed from notes for an unwritten novel and maybe one day that novel will be completed, for we need to know the fate of the Earth. This story presents one of the more unusual apocalyptic ideas.

Mammoth Books presents Sleepover eBook Alastair Reynolds

First of all, this is mostly a note to those buying this book that it is NOT 300 pages. It might not even be 40 pages, it is truly a short story, not a novella. That said, Mr. Reynolds is one of my very favorite authors and this story does not disappoint, he's in good form here with a tale that is really intriguing and certainly could have been developed into something longer. I hope Amazon will correct the page count, however I'm not sorry I made the purchase - if you like this author, go ahead, it's worthy of your time and you will enjoy the story.

Mammoth Books presents Sleepover eBook Alastair Reynolds Reviews

Well-crafted, well-thought-out story. Great, weird dystopian future. Characters are a little bit too mean and nasty to one another – – it was hard to like them. That's not really a criticism, really more of a comment I don't demand to like every character. But still, why are they all such angry Dickheads?

Also there's a bit of an over alliance on a few sci-fi tropes...but I guess that's somewhat unavoidable in this genre. I can't get too into it without including a ton of spoilers. Anyway, to summarize I loved it.
This is a short story that flings out three great concepts around a vignette of an unimaginable future. Reynolds manages to combine artificial intelligence, "brane space" and voluntary human extinction into a story that slowly gathers our attention until it resolves itself in a way leaving us wanting for more.

Potential purchasers should keep in mind that this is a short story. Don't expect much more from it than to be tantalized by the ideas that Reynolds outlines here. But what ideas they are. I found myself being dragged into the story wondering why there were so few people in this future earth into which the main character emerged and then, when the answer to that mystery was revealed, I found myself thinking "wow!" and what it be like if our phenomenal world was just the epiphenomenon of something more basic.
Another Reynolds short story I wouldn't mind seeing expanded into a novel. I won't spoil it, so I can't say much about it, but if you like the idea behind The Matrix you might like this short. The main protagonist wakes in a world, after being in cryogenic sleep, that he was not prepared for. It's a quick read, and over before I was ready.
This short story is just that -short annnnnd a story. Most can read this in about an hour and a half. I see a few claims that .99 is too much to ask for a story this short tale. Well, blame . That's their lowest purchase point. Even then, we're talking about .99 cents in a time when people plunk down 5 dollars for a sugar infused cold coffee drink that lasts 10 minutes. I digress.

I will note that the book page lists this as being a 300 page book and that is a gross mistake that should be fixed. Of course, reading almost any of the reviews reveals that it's closer to 40 pages in total.

Although this story seems like it could be part of something much larger and longer, it stands well enough on its own. If your goal is to read something that's sci-fi and entertaining, then it's mission accomplished for SLEEPOVER. I was easily pulled into this story of a potential cryogenic future and would enjoy more of it. The concept, while delivered quickly and leaving you with questions, is interesting and worth the price of admission. If Reynolds ever decides to expand this into a full book (or, better yet, a serialized digital release), I'll be among the first purchasers.

At 40 pages, more or less, I don't really see this as a novella. It's a short story. A good short story. Buyers need to do a better job of examining stories before they buy them and understand that .99 is nothing to them, , or the author.
Reynolds writes a mean dystopian vision in this short, but then fails to capitalize on the concepts. Obviously, you can only do so much in a 50-odd page count, but he writes so well and this just felt so constrained. I get that it's "developed from notes for an unwritten novel" but when you are trading on your reputation to sell books, integrity is important.

Anyway, I digress from the review. Our protagonist, Gaunt, is in cryo sleep, having gone under expecting to wake up in a wonderful future where today's science fiction fantasy has turned into tomorrows mundane, including immortality. What a shock to find that tomorrow is not just worse than today, it is a nightmare that he could never have thought might happen.

It's a tight little world that Reynolds gives us, both in cast and location. There is nothing overly forward thinking in the tech so don't expect anything like Revelation Space in style or theme. The only untoward aspect is a kind of 'locked box' mystery for Gaunt to puzzle out. It is nicely written, Reynolds is good at that type of reveal. What I could not decide was whether it is enough to sustain the story arc. Still can't really.

There is little graphic violence, I don't recall any swearing, the characters are not nasty to each other, and the concept is provoking, so this would make an appropriate YA read. Certainly I would read a novel fleshed out from these bones, just on the basis of Reynolds' prior work, and I'm happy to recommend this because it's cheap enough and short enough that your investment is pretty low in both dimensions.
